Chandigarh: The Punjab government is likely to convene a special session of the Assembly on July 10 and 11, 2025, to address key issues, including a proposed strict law against sacrilege and measures to curb drug trafficking in the state.
Ahead of the session, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has called a cabinet meeting at his residence on July 7 at 10:30 am to discuss and finalise these proposals. The government plans to introduce a law that would penalise the insult of religious texts and faith, addressing a long-standing demand amid opposition criticism.
The cabinet is also expected to discuss measures to tackle the state’s drug problem, with plans for a sequel to the ‘Drug Free Punjab’ campaign. This may include opening de-addiction clinics, focusing on rehabilitation, and introducing stricter laws to curb drug trafficking.
The Punjab government has been under consistent attack from the opposition over the issues of sacrilege and drug trafficking, and it now aims to take concrete steps at the policy level to address these challenges.
