Punjab Women’s Commission summons Karan Aujla, Yo Yo Honey Singh over objectionable lyrics

Chandigarh: The Punjab State Women’s Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of objectionable language allegedly used for women in singer Karan Aujla’s song MF Gabhru and Yo Yo Honey Singh’s track Millionaire, both circulating widely on social media.

Exercising powers under Section 12 of the Punjab State Women Commission Act, 2001, Commission chairperson Raj Lali Gill has written to the Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) and the Director of the Bureau of Investigation, urging them to probe the matter and initiate action against the singers in accordance with the law.

In separate letters, Gill asked that a senior officer from the Punjab Police Headquarters be appointed to investigate the lyrics and submit a status report to the Commission by August 11. The Commission has also directed both singers to appear in person at its office in Phase I, Mohali — Karan Aujla at 11:00 am and Yo Yo Honey Singh at 11:30 am on the same day.

The letters sent to the police officials also included links to the two songs currently being circulated on social media.

The Commission’s action comes after it received a written complaint on August 4 from Chandigarh-based assistant professor Panditrao Dhrenwar, who raised objections to the language used in MF Gabhru and demanded action against Aujla.
