Six-month-old girl killed by grandparents in Jalandhar after mother eloped with lover

Jalandhar: A six-month-old girl was allegedly murdered by her maternal grandparents in Punjab’s Jalandhar district after her mother eloped with her lover, police said on Sunday.

According to police, the child’s mother, Maninder Kaur, who had been married three times, ran away with her boyfriend on August 9, leaving the baby at her parents’ home in Dalla village under Bhogpur police station limits.

The infant, who would cry continuously in her mother’s absence, was allegedly strangled by her grandparents, Tarsem and his wife Diljit Kaur.

Police said the couple later dumped the body under a culvert along the highway. The incident came to light after both accused were interrogated in custody, leading to the recovery of the child’s body.

Officials said the grandparents confessed they were unable to console the child despite repeated attempts. Police have launched further investigation into the case.
