New Delhi: A key meeting on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue was held in Delhi on Monday, led by Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil, with the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana — Bhagwant Singh Mann and Nayab Singh Saini — in attendance.
After the meeting, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and suggested that scrapping the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan could help resolve India’s internal water disputes.
“The fight is over 2-3 MAF (million acre-feet) of water, but if the Indus Treaty is cancelled, 24 MAF water can come to us,” said CM Mann. He added, “If Trump doesn’t announce anything and the treaty is cancelled, we’ll get water.”
Mann said that while the SYL issue was inherited from the past, it had become a festering wound for both Punjab and Haryana. “Some matters are moving forward. Today’s conversation brought out a few points that could lead to a way ahead,” he said.
