Amritsar: The Vigilance Bureau on Wednesday conducted another raid at the Amritsar residence of senior Akali leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia in connection with a disproportionate assets case. The raid was carried out amid heavy police deployment to ensure there was no obstruction during the process.

Sources said Majithia’s lawyer, Arshdeep Singh Kaler, arrived at the house before officials began measuring the property and verifying related documents. Public prosecutor Ferry Soft confirmed the raid and said that all formalities were completed in the presence of Majithia’s lawyer, adding that no interference in the investigation would be tolerated.

Majithia was recently arrested in the case, which his legal team claims is an attempt by the government to malign his image. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has termed Majithia’s arrest a major step in the state’s campaign against drugs.

During the assembly session on July 15, Mann had said that when a “big crocodile” involved in drug smuggling was caught, some Congress leaders were also uncomfortable, adding that the government would not extend any special treatment to the accused.

The latest raid has further intensified the political tension in Punjab as the investigation against Majithia continues.
