Dublin: An incident of racial discrimination against an Indian woman has surfaced in Dublin, Ireland. Swati Verma, an Indian national, faced a disturbing racist attack on the evening of October 8, 2025, while returning home from the gym.

According to Verma, an unknown woman stopped her on the street and began asking hateful questions about her presence in the country. “Why have you come to Ireland? What are you doing here? Why don’t you go back to India?” the woman allegedly said in an aggressive tone.

Verma noticed that the woman was wearing a badge of Dublin City University (DCU) and initially thought she needed help. However, she was soon confronted with remarks laced with racial prejudice.

Shocked and frightened, Verma said she tried to stay calm during the encounter. “I never thought I would have to justify my presence in the place I go to every day,” she said later in a post on Instagram, where she also shared a video describing the incident.

The episode has triggered a wider discussion in Ireland about racism and the experiences of immigrants, with many expressing concern over the safety and treatment of ethnic minorities in the country.

Addressing a press conference, BJP state general secretary Jagmohan Singh Raju said the Punjab Prevention of Crimes against Holy Scriptures Bill, 2025, had no merit and did not even define sacrilege clearly.

“The Mann government has completely failed and is now trying to cover up its failures by bringing this bill in the Punjab Assembly. At present, this bill is a waste of time,” Raju said.

He said the AAP government had used the platform of the Vidhan Sabha to “create a new drum” for political mileage. While there was a need to bring a proper law against sacrilege, the state government had done “drama” by bringing this bill after three and a half years in power, he said.

Raju also claimed that while it was being propagated that the bill provided for imprisonment ranging from 10 years to life, there was no mention of life imprisonment anywhere in the bill.

Chandigarh: The Punjab Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has approved the ‘Punjab Prevention of Crime against Holy Scriptures Bill, 2025’, paving the way for stringent punishment, including life imprisonment, for those found guilty of sacrilege of any holy book.

According to officials, past incidents of sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and other holy texts had deeply hurt people’s sentiments. The Cabinet noted that existing sections 298, 299 and 300 of the Indian Penal Code do not prescribe stringent punishment to effectively prevent such incidents.

Considering the gravity of these crimes and the need to maintain communal harmony and religious sanctity, the Cabinet decided to bring in a state-level law to make punishments more stringent. The bill provides for life imprisonment for those convicted of desecrating the Guru Granth Sahib, Bhagavad Gita, Holy Bible, Quran Sharif and other holy scriptures.

Officials said that the law will strengthen efforts to maintain peace, unity and communal harmony in the state while helping curb anti-social and anti-national activities by ensuring strict punishment for perpetrators of such crimes.

At present, there is no specific law addressing crimes against holy scriptures, resulting in many accused escaping serious action. The proposed legislation aims to fill this legal vacuum by covering sacrilege cases involving all religions and communities.

Under the bill, anyone found guilty of sacrilege can face a jail term ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment. Those attempting the crime may face imprisonment between three to five years, while individuals involved in abetment will be punished according to the severity of the crime.

New Delhi: In a first-of-its-kind move, the Supreme Court administration has written to the Centre, requesting it to vacate the official residence of the Chief Justice of India at Krishna Menon Marg, where former CJI DY Chandrachud continues to stay even after the expiry of his term.

On July 1, the Supreme Court sent a letter to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, asking it to vacate bungalow number 5 on Krishna Menon Marg for the present Chief Justice. The letter pointed out that the permission granted to Chandrachud to stay in the bungalow expired on May 31, 2025, and the six-month extension period under the 2022 rules had also lapsed.

Under Rule 3B of the Supreme Court Judges (Amendment) Rules, 2022, a retired Chief Justice of India can retain a Type VII bungalow, which is below the Krishna Menon Marg category, for a maximum of six months after retirement.

Chandrachud, who served as the 50th Chief Justice from November 2022 to November 2024, was succeeded by Sanjiv Khanna, who decided not to move into government accommodation during his six-month tenure. The current Chief Justice, B R Gavai, has also chosen to stay in the bungalow already allotted to him.
