The 64-year-old leader, who is regarded as one of the most influential faces of the Vokkaliga community, had earlier served as Deputy Chief Minister in the Siddaramaiah-led government. He was chosen to lead the legislature party shortly after the change in leadership.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by several top Congress leaders, including Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, AICC general secretaries K.C. Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala, along with chief ministers from Congress-ruled states and other senior party functionaries.

A number of distinguished guests, public representatives and religious leaders from different communities also attended the event.

Senior Congress leader G. Parameshwara was among those sworn in as a minister in the new cabinet. Party sources indicated that he is expected to be assigned the role of Deputy Chief Minister in the Shivakumar government.
