Punjab reels under floods, 1,300 villages hit and 26 dead

Chandigarh: Floods have wreaked havoc across eight districts of Punjab over the past week, affecting more than 1,300 villages and claiming 26 lives. Officials said intermittent rains since Sunday have worsened the situation, pushing water levels higher in the Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej rivers, along with the Ghaggar river.

Districts including Mohali, Patiala, Sangrur and Mansa are under threat due to the rising level of the Ghaggar.

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for nine districts — Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, Ropar, Mohali and Fatehgarh Sahib — for September 1, while predicting more rain on September 2.

Almost all major cities in Punjab remained inundated following continuous heavy rainfall since last night. Chandigarh recorded 76.5 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours, Ludhiana 216.7 mm, Patiala 80.4 mm, Amritsar 24.1 mm, Faridkot 10.2 mm, Nawanshahr 112.7 mm, Ferozepur 12 mm, Hoshiarpur 26.5 mm, Mansa 42 mm, Mohali 64 mm and Ropar 82.5 mm.

Flood crisis deepens in Punjab as rivers overflow, thousands displaced

Chandigarh: Incessant rains in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh have triggered severe flooding in Punjab, leaving a trail of devastation across the state. Rising water levels in the Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej rivers have engulfed seven districts, while several others remain under threat.

Thousands of residents from hundreds of villages have been rendered homeless and were shifted to safer locations by the administration. Farmers have suffered massive losses as thousands of acres of crops were submerged. The Punjab government has urged residents of villages situated along riverbanks to remain on alert.

The situation worsened on Wednesday after the Ravi river overflowed, inundating several villages in Amritsar district, including parts of Ajnala. Officials said the water level at Ranjit Sagar Dam crossed the danger mark of 527.91 metres, forcing authorities to continue releasing water. On Tuesday, 1.95 lakh cusecs of water was discharged from the dam, with further releases expected today.

In addition, water is also being released from Bhakra and Pong dams, further intensifying the flood threat. Authorities confirmed that the flood situation remains critical in Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, and Fazilka districts.

Athlete Fauja Singh’s funeral to be held on July 20 in village Beas

Jalandhar: Fauja Singh, known worldwide for his marathon records and inspirational life, died on Monday after being hit by a car while taking a walk outside his house in Jalandhar, Punjab, officials said. He was 114.

The incident occurred late Monday evening. Singh, who was seriously injured, was admitted to a private hospital, where he died during treatment.

His funeral will be held on July 20 in his native village, Beas, where many personalities from Punjab are expected to gather to bid him a final farewell.

The death of Singh has plunged the sports world and his fans into mourning, with many remembering him not only as a remarkable athlete but also as a man of courage and inspiration.

Police have launched an investigation into the accident and are searching for the unidentified vehicle and its driver. The Jalandhar administration has confirmed his death and expressed grief over the loss.
