Directed by Honey Trehan and produced by RSVP Movies and MacGuffin Pictures, the film stars Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role alongside Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan.

Speaking about the project, Diljit Dosanjh said Jaswant Singh Khalra’s sacrifice and contribution to humanity inspired him to be part of the film.

“When I first heard the story, it gave me goosebumps and deeply moved me. It is based on the real-life struggles, sacrifices and experiences of extraordinary people. As an actor, one rarely gets an opportunity to be part of such a meaningful story. I tried to portray this character with complete honesty, sincerity and respect,” he said.

Diljit added that Sutlej is a story of faith, courage and humanity, calling it one of the most meaningful performances of his career.

Director Honey Trehan said the team’s objective from the beginning was to present the story with honesty and sensitivity without compromising its essence. He said audiences can finally watch the film after a long wait.

The film underwent multiple title changes before its release. It was initially titled ‘Ghallughara’, a term associated with major historical events in Sikh history. When the makers submitted the film to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in late 2022, it was cleared after nearly six months with 21 cuts, and the title was changed to ‘Punjab 95’.

The producers later challenged the CBFC’s decision in the Bombay High Court. During the controversy, the film’s scheduled premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) was also cancelled, with reports at the time attributing the decision to political reasons.

Honey Trehan said the makers were ultimately unable to retain the earlier title, following which the film has now been released on ZEE5 as ‘Sutlej’.
