Chandigarh: Punjab BJP president Keval Singh Dhillon on Sunday responded sharply to former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s criticism of his appointment, saying the veteran leader was disappointed by his diminishing political relevance and was attempting to regain attention by questioning the party’s leadership decision.

The remarks came days after Capt Amarinder Singh claimed that he had not been consulted before Dhillon was appointed as the new state BJP chief. The former chief minister had also expressed doubts about Dhillon’s ability to lead the party and deliver on its political ambitions in Punjab.

Dhillon said Capt Amarinder Singh appeared unhappy with his reduced role in active politics and was using the issue of the BJP’s state leadership to revive his political standing.

“At the same time, Capt Amarinder Singh is like an elder brother to me and I continue to hold him in high regard,” Dhillon said, while responding to the criticism for the first time since assuming charge as state BJP president.

Outlining his priorities as party chief, Dhillon said Punjab’s agriculture sector would remain at the centre of his political agenda. Describing himself as the son of a farmer, he said efforts would be made to improve the economic condition of farmers and make agriculture a profitable profession once again.

“The real challenge is to make farming financially viable. I will soon approach the BJP leadership and the Central government with a roadmap aimed at supporting Punjab’s agriculture sector and addressing farmers’ concerns,” he said.

Dhillon’s remarks come amid growing political activity in Punjab as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
