Carney was responding to a question on whether he had raised the Nijjar case with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada’s Cananskis on Tuesday.

“The Prime Minister and I discussed the importance of the rule of law, direct cooperation, among other issues. The matter is sub-judice in court, so I need to be careful not to comment on it,” Carney said.

Relations between India and Canada had sharply deteriorated in September 2023 after then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in Nijjar’s murder, a claim New Delhi strongly rejected.

However, after Tuesday’s meeting between Modi and Carney, both countries agreed to work towards the early restoration of high commissioners in each other’s capitals, a key step in mending diplomatic ties.
