Jalandhar: The District Bar Association, Jalandhar, convened an urgent meeting to discuss extortion threats received by senior advocate and former association president, Mandeep Singh Sachdev.

According to the association, Sachdev had been getting threatening calls and Facebook Messenger messages from Sandeep Singh, who runs social media accounts from Canada. Singh allegedly demanded ransom and warned of dire consequences if his demands were not met.

Following a complaint, an FIR was registered against Sandeep Singh and his brother Jatinder Singh, a former client of Sachdev. Despite this, Sandeep Singh allegedly continued to send threats and claimed that his associate would personally collect the ransom money.

On September 18, one person, identified as Sam Kwatra, reportedly arrived at Sachdev’s office at Plaza Chowk, Jalandhar, to collect the ransom. He was caught on the spot and arrested by police. However, the Bar Association expressed shock that police later released him, declaring him innocent, which it said raised serious doubts about their conduct and intentions.

The association further alleged that Sandeep Singh later posted derogatory remarks on social media targeting Sachdev, his wife advocate Samrata Sachdev, and their daughter advocate Meher Sachdev.

It also claimed that Singh’s father, Parminder Singh, who recently returned from Canada, was involved in extortion attempts.

Calling the developments “disturbing,” the Bar Association accused police of failing to conduct a fair investigation and said the matter has shaken the legal fraternity.

Chandigarh: Floods have wreaked havoc across eight districts of Punjab over the past week, affecting more than 1,300 villages and claiming 26 lives. Officials said intermittent rains since Sunday have worsened the situation, pushing water levels higher in the Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej rivers, along with the Ghaggar river.

Districts including Mohali, Patiala, Sangrur and Mansa are under threat due to the rising level of the Ghaggar.

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for nine districts — Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, Ropar, Mohali and Fatehgarh Sahib — for September 1, while predicting more rain on September 2.

Almost all major cities in Punjab remained inundated following continuous heavy rainfall since last night. Chandigarh recorded 76.5 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours, Ludhiana 216.7 mm, Patiala 80.4 mm, Amritsar 24.1 mm, Faridkot 10.2 mm, Nawanshahr 112.7 mm, Ferozepur 12 mm, Hoshiarpur 26.5 mm, Mansa 42 mm, Mohali 64 mm and Ropar 82.5 mm.

Chandigarh: Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, authorities have ordered blackouts in several border districts of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Jammu. The move is part of emergency measures to deal with the sensitive situation along the Indo-Pak border.

In Punjab, blackouts have been imposed in Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, and Faridkot. The Chandigarh administration has also announced a blackout, with neighbouring areas Panchkula in Haryana and Zirakpur in Punjab following suit.

The Gurdaspur district administration said an eight-hour nightly blackout would begin from 9 pm on Thursday. “In view of the sensitive situation along the Indo-Pak border, there will be a complete blackout from 9 pm to 5 am in Gurdaspur from May 8 till further orders, to deal with the emergency situation under the Civil Defence Act, 1968, as per the directions of the Government of India and the Government of Punjab,” the Deputy Commissioner of Gurdaspur said in an official order.

The order clarified that exemptions would apply to the central jail and district hospitals. However, it directed that during the blackout period, all doors and windows must remain closed to prevent any light from escaping.

Chandigarh: India’s air defence system foiled multiple aerial attacks on military installations in Punjab late Wednesday night, the Defence Ministry said. Pakistani attempts to strike northern and western cities reportedly targeted bases in Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Adampur, Ludhiana, Bathinda, and Chandigarh.

In Amritsar, loud explosions were heard around midnight, prompting a double blackout in the city. Debris from rockets was discovered in Ghagwal village of Hoshiarpur, and by Thursday morning, rocket fragments were found scattered across four villages.

Amritsar Rural SSP Maninder Singh confirmed the incident and said the Army was immediately alerted. “The Army teams are visiting villages and collecting rockets,” he said.

Rockets were retrieved from Dudhala, Jethuwal, and Pandher, while a live rocket was found in Makanwindi. A technical team was summoned to defuse it. The Indian Air Force also dispatched a team to the site.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Pakistani Air Force has intensified activity along the Punjab-Rajasthan border, deploying F-16s, JF-17s, and other aircraft. Several jets were seen flying over Lahore.

In response to the escalating situation, the Punjab Police have cancelled all leaves for officers and staff from May 7 until further notice. Leave will only be granted in exceptional cases with approval from senior officials.
