Several others, including a female police officer, were injured in the attack. Authorities have not yet officially identified the gunman.

Following the shooting, the entire town was placed under lockdown for several hours amid fears that a second suspect could be involved. The restrictions were later lifted after investigators confirmed that the attacker had acted alone.

According to preliminary information, the armed suspect arrived in a busy commercial area and began firing indiscriminately at people without warning. A civilian was killed at the scene.

When a police patrol reached the location, the gunman reportedly turned his weapon on officers. During the exchange of fire, one police officer was killed and a female officer sustained injuries. Additional police units then responded and fatally shot the attacker.

Montreal police spokesperson Manuel Coucher identified the slain officer as 34-year-old Mohamed Lemin, who had served with the police department for the past five years.

Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez praised the officer’s bravery, saying he sacrificed his life while helping protect innocent people. Police flags have been lowered in his honour as a mark of respect and mourning.

Authorities have not released the identity of the civilian victim, nor have they made public any photographs of those involved.

Investigators later uncovered what they described as disturbing evidence about the suspect’s motives. Police recovered a 100-page handwritten diary from a location linked to the gunman.

According to investigators, the writings reveal deep anger toward the current political and social system. The suspect allegedly expressed frustration with governance and claimed that ordinary people were suffering under the existing system, which he believed needed to be changed.

Police are examining the diary and other evidence as part of the ongoing investigation into the attack and the motives behind it.
