The collection drive was launched on Wednesday along the Kiratpur Sahib-Kullu-Manali highway and is being led by members of the Tarna Dal. According to the organisers, charges are being collected from motorists based on the category of vehicle.

Representatives of the group said private vehicles, including cars, are being asked to contribute ₹100, while smaller commercial vehicles are being charged ₹200. Larger vehicles are being asked to pay between ₹300 and ₹500.

The group has also announced plans to stage demonstrations along the highway to highlight its opposition to the Himachal Pradesh entry tax policy.

Responding to questions over the legality of collecting such a levy, members of the organisation claimed the funds would be used for community welfare activities. They maintained that contributions were being sought voluntarily and that no coercion would be used.

The protesters argued that toll collections by highway authorities are linked to road infrastructure and maintenance, while alleging that the Himachal Pradesh entry tax places an unfair burden on travellers.

The development has sparked debate over the legality of such collections and the ongoing dispute surrounding taxation on vehicles entering Himachal Pradesh. Authorities have not yet issued a detailed response regarding the collection drive.

The situation is being closely monitored as both Punjab and Himachal Pradesh continue to face pressure from various groups over the issue.
