Chandigarh: The Punjab School Education Department has directed all government and aided schools across the state to remain open on Saturday and Sunday (July 11 and 12) and function as regular working days to support the Special Intensive Revision (SIR-2026) of electoral rolls.

In an order issued on Friday, School Education Secretary Sonali Giri instructed all school staff to remain present on duty and extend full cooperation to officials engaged in the voter list revision exercise.

The directive follows instructions issued a day earlier by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Punjab, to all Deputy Commissioners-cum-District Election Officers.

According to the Election Commission’s schedule, the door-to-door verification phase of SIR-2026 began on June 25 and will continue until July 24. To speed up the collection and digitisation of enumeration forms, the CEO has ordered special camps at all polling stations on July 11 and 12, where Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will remain available from 8 am to 3 pm on both days.

Officials who have completed 100 per cent digitisation of voter data will use the camps to rectify errors and deficiencies in the forms, while those with pending digitisation work will focus on clearing the backlog and collecting the remaining forms.

To ensure the exercise is completed smoothly, staff of schools housing polling booths, along with Patwaris from the Revenue Department and Anganwadi workers, will assist BLOs during the campaign.

In urban areas, staff from Urban Local Bodies, Assembly and district-level master trainers, and BLO supervisors will provide additional support, particularly at polling stations where digitisation work is lagging.

The Chief Electoral Officer has also directed Deputy Commissioners to personally monitor the special camps to ensure the voter list revision exercise is completed efficiently and in accordance with the prescribed guidelines.
