New Delhi: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court of India challenging the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) three-language policy, under which Class 9 students will be required to study three languages, including two Indian languages, from July 1.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant on Friday agreed to hear the matter next week after senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi sought urgent listing of the petition filed by Yashika Bhandari Jain and others.

Rohatgi told the bench that the petition had been filed by students, teachers and parents challenging the new CBSE policy that makes two additional languages compulsory in Class 9.

Requesting an urgent hearing, Rohatgi argued that students could not suddenly adapt to the revised language requirements and then appear for examinations in Class 10 under the changed framework. He said the move could create confusion and academic disruption.

Taking note of the submission, the bench — also comprising Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M Pancholi — said the matter would be listed during the upcoming miscellaneous hearing week.

The petitioners have sought cancellation of the CBSE circular issued on May 15 regarding the three-language policy and restoration of the position announced in the board’s April 9 notification, which had deferred compulsory implementation of the policy for Class 9 students until the 2029-30 academic session.

They have also sought interim protection against implementation of the revised language policy for current students.
