According to initial reports, two women died on the spot, while at least five others sustained serious injuries. The injured women were rushed to Sri Guru Ram Das Hospital for treatment.

Officials from the Civil Defence Team of Division Number 1 said a langar programme organised by Baba Bhuri Wale was underway at the time of the incident when the roof structure suddenly gave way.

One injured woman from Ajnala said she had come to pay obeisance and was standing in a queue when panic erupted after the collapse.

“I suddenly felt a push and fell down. Due to fear and chaos, I lost consciousness. When I regained consciousness, I saw several women injured around me,” she said.

Eyewitness Jagjit Singh said a weekly Japji Sahib gathering is organised at the gurdwara every Sunday, during which devotees participate in seva activities.

He said a loud noise was heard moments before the collapse. “When we reached the spot, around eight to nine women were trapped beneath the iron shuttering plates,” he added.

Rescue operations were immediately launched by local volunteers and emergency teams, while police have started an investigation into the incident.
