The decision was taken by Uttar Pradesh Governor and Chancellor of universities Anandiben Patel during a high-level review meeting, where she directed authorities to implement the uniform system with immediate effect.

Until now, no such rule existed in higher educational institutions across the state.

Explaining the rationale behind the move, the Governor said that introducing uniforms in colleges and universities, similar to schools, would help eliminate social discrimination and visible economic differences among students. She said a common dress code would ensure equality and create a more disciplined academic environment.

The Governor also instructed teachers to maintain the dignity of the teaching profession and avoid any conduct that could damage its reputation. She emphasised that classes should be conducted on time and student attendance must be ensured regularly.

During the meeting, Anandiben Patel also stressed the need to make higher education more employment-oriented. She directed universities to introduce new vocational and skill-based courses aimed at making students, especially girls, more self-reliant.

Institutions have been advised to start short-term courses in areas such as beautician training, mehndi art, GST, bindi manufacturing, accountancy and millet-based food preparation.

The Governor further instructed universities to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) more effectively and ensure that students get opportunities to learn additional skills such as yoga, painting and other creative disciplines alongside their main academic subjects.
