Chandigarh: The flood situation in Punjab has deteriorated following intermittent rains since Saturday morning, with more than 1,000 villages submerged and 26 people reported dead so far. The rising water levels in the Beas and Ghaggar rivers have heightened concerns, while the Ravi river has inundated several villages in Ajnala constituency.

Officials said the situation may only improve once excess water flows into Pakistan. In Ghanaur, water from the swollen Ghaggar river has entered agricultural fields, while alerts have been issued in Samana, Shutrana and nearby areas. Residents living close to the river have begun shifting their belongings to safer places.

Ajnala MLA Kuldeep Dhaliwal said large parts of his constituency, situated along the Pakistan border, have been devastated by floods. “The Centre should immediately come to the aid of Punjab,” he said.

According to the Meteorological Department, rainfall has been recorded in Bathinda, Sangrur, Mansa, Amritsar, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib and Ropar. Further rain has been forecast across Punjab for Saturday and Sunday, September 1.
