Chandigarh: A woman posing as a nurse at the Civil Hospital in Punjab’s Sangrur district allegedly attempted to steal a baby, but was caught before she could flee with the child. Hospital attendants and bystanders raised an alarm and detained her until police arrived.<\/p>\n
The accused, identified as Sumiti, a resident of Salem Tabri in Ludhiana district, has been arrested. Sangrur police have registered a case against her under Section 137(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation is underway.<\/p>\n
Rohit Kumar, whose child was born at the hospital, told police that the woman approached them claiming to be a nurse. \u201cShe started playing with our baby, which made us suspicious. We pulled the baby away from her. Then she started playing with another child,\u201d he said in his statement.<\/p>\n
Kumar added that they confronted the woman and began questioning her. She failed to give satisfactory answers and could not produce any identification when asked. \u201cBy that time, she had picked up another child. When we asked for her ID, she couldn\u2019t show anything. Meanwhile, real hospital staff arrived at the scene,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
