Chandigarh: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Malvinder Singh Kang has strongly opposed any attempt to rename Panjab University, calling such moves unconstitutional and an insult to Punjab\u2019s cultural and historical identity. He also condemned recent remarks supporting alleged efforts to undermine the university’s autonomy.<\/p>\n

Kang criticised Haryana Congress MP Deepender Hooda for \u201cspeaking the language of the BJP\u201d and accused the BJP of attempting to assert control over Panjab University. He alleged that both parties were working in tandem to weaken the institution\u2019s democratic structure and its cultural foundation.<\/p>\n

\u201cPanjab University is not just an educational institution. It is a symbol of our historical, cultural and emotional heritage,\u201d Kang said. He pointed out that the university was established before the Partition and has been central to the preservation of Punjabi language, values and identity.<\/p>\n

Rejecting attempts to associate Haryana with Panjab University, Kang recalled that in 1973, colleges in Haryana had voluntarily disaffiliated from the university under the leadership of then Chief Minister Bansi Lal. \u201cFor over 50 years, Haryana has had no connection with Panjab University. On what basis are they now demanding ownership or a change in its name?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

He further said that if Haryana\u2019s leaders wanted a similar institution, they should consider setting up a new ‘Haryana University’ instead of interfering with Punjab\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n

Kang also criticised the BJP for stalling the university’s Senate elections for the past two years. \u201cThis has directly weakened the governance and autonomy of the university. It is evident that the BJP wants to take control,\u201d he said, adding that Hooda\u2019s remarks align with the BJP\u2019s agenda, showing that \u201cCongress and BJP are two sides of the same coin.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
