Chandigarh: Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar has reiterated the need for a BJP-Akali Dal alliance in the state, saying it is crucial for maintaining communal harmony and peace.<\/p>\n
In an interview to a reputed English daily, Jakhar said that the current situation in Punjab is similar to 1996, when both parties came together to protect social fabric and stability.<\/p>\n
Jakhar said that Punjab is not just a piece of land, but a deeply emotional and self-respecting society where people value their culture and dignity. \u201cThe turban and dastar here are not just attire but symbols of self-respect,\u201d he said, adding that the spirit of resistance in Punjab stems from Guru Gobind Singh\u2019s teachings of standing against injustice and oppression.<\/p>\n
He acknowledged that despite the BJP having done no wrong to Punjab in the past, the party faces public resentment today due to its position at the Centre. Jakhar emphasised that Punjabis are resilient and proud of their history but feel their sacrifices have been overlooked and their contributions unrecognised.<\/p>\n
\u201cPunjab seeks more than financial packages; it seeks recognition, respect and a sense of belonging,\u201d he said. Highlighting the significance of \u2018pagri\u2019 as a symbol of self-esteem and leadership, Jakhar said the people of Punjab need a party that connects with them emotionally and not just as administrators.<\/p>\n
