{"id":50859,"date":"2025-09-11T16:28:44","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T10:58:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/punjabenews.com\/English\/?p=50859"},"modified":"2025-09-11T16:28:44","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T10:58:44","slug":"supreme-court-to-hear-kangana-ranauts-plea-in-defamation-case-over-remarks-on-farm-protester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/punjabenews.com\/English\/latest\/supreme-court-to-hear-kangana-ranauts-plea-in-defamation-case-over-remarks-on-farm-protester\/","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court to hear Kangana Ranaut\u2019s plea in defamation case over remarks on farm protester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court is set to hear a plea filed by actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut seeking the quashing of a defamation case against her over remarks on an elderly woman during the farmers\u2019 protests against the three farm laws.<\/p>\n<p>A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta will take up the matter after the Punjab and Haryana High Court, on August 2, dismissed Ranaut\u2019s plea challenging the case.<\/p>\n<p>The case stems from a tweet posted by Ranaut in 2020, in which she allegedly identified 73-year-old Mohinder Kaur, a resident of Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Punjab\u2019s Bathinda district, as Bilkis Bano, popularly known as the \u201cShaheen Bagh dadi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaur filed a complaint in a Bathinda court in 2021, alleging that Ranaut\u2019s remarks were false and defamatory, damaging her reputation.<\/p>\n<p>While rejecting Ranaut\u2019s plea, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had said there were \u201cspecific allegations against the petitioner, who is a celebrity, that the false and defamatory retweet had tarnished the respondent\u2019s reputation.\u201d The court further observed that filing a complaint to safeguard one\u2019s rights could not be termed as malafide.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court is set to hear a plea filed by actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut seeking the quashing of a defamation case against her over remarks on an elderly woman during the farmers\u2019 protests against the three farm laws.
