CHANDIGARH: Amid the growing political uproar over the reorganisation of the Senate and Syndicate of Panjab University (PU), the central government has softened its stance and deferred the immediate implementation of the restructuring. A revised order to this effect has been issued by the Centre.<\/p>\n
According to the new order, the changes proposed under the Panjab University Act, 1947, will come into effect only from a date to be notified later by the central government. This effectively means that a fresh notification will be required to implement the reforms.<\/p>\n
The decision follows intense protests by students, opposition parties and farmer unions. The controversy gained momentum after The Tribune reported the development on Saturday, triggering a political storm in Punjab and Chandigarh.<\/p>\n
