Kolkata: A day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited an Enforcement Directorate (ED) search site and allegedly took away a set of documents, the BJP has questioned what the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief was trying to conceal.<\/p>\n
Accusing Mamata Banerjee of obstructing the work of a central agency and committing serious criminal offences during an ongoing investigation, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad asked what \u201csensitive information\u201d the West Bengal chief minister was attempting to hide. Describing the incident as unprecedented in independent India, Prasad said Mamata Banerjee\u2019s actions were \u201cimmoral, irresponsible and unconstitutional\u201d.<\/p>\n
Prasad said, \u201cA sitting chief minister reaches the site of an ongoing ED probe, accompanied by senior state police officers. She argues with investigators and walks away with documents. The raid was conducted at the premises of a private organisation, not at the chief minister\u2019s residence, office or party office. Clearly, there was something sensitive at that location which Mamata Banerjee wanted to remove out of fear of being exposed. What was it?\u201d<\/p>\n
Referring to past instances, including an alleged attempt to shield an associate in a sexual exploitation probe, Prasad said Mamata Banerjee has repeatedly obstructed sensitive corruption and rape investigations in the state. The BJP, the main opposition party in West Bengal, said she has at times staged sit-ins in support of the accused while her MPs have led protests.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is happening? She is guilty of serious criminal offences and the law will take its course,\u201d the BJP said.<\/p>\n
The ED had on Thursday conducted searches at 10 locations in West Bengal linked to political consultancy firm I-PAC. Mamata Banerjee visited the residence of I-PAC\u2019s Bengal director Pratik Jain and was seen leaving with a green folder and a laptop.<\/p>\n
