Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal leaders Friday met Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and alleged that the state government has done \u201cnothing substantive\u201d to ensure the safety of jailed party leader Bikram Singh Majithia, despite intelligence inputs indicating a threat to his life.<\/p>\n
In a memorandum submitted to the Governor, senior Akali Dal leaders urged him to issue necessary directions to ensure Majithia\u2019s security, saying they had no confidence in the Aam Aadmi Party government\u2019s willingness to take effective steps. The delegation said Majithia\u2019s life faced a \u201cserious threat\u201d and alleged a violation of his fundamental rights.<\/p>\n
Majithia is currently lodged at Nabha Jail. He was arrested in June last year by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau in a disproportionate assets case. He is also a relative of former chief minister Sukhbir Badal.<\/p>\n
Members of the Akali Dal delegation, including Balwinder Singh Bhundar, Maheshinder Singh Grewal, Daljit Singh Cheema and Ganieve Kaur Majithia, said that despite inputs from central intelligence agencies warning that Babbar Khalsa International could target Majithia, no adequate security measures were being taken for him or his family, allegedly in violation of High Court directions.<\/p>\n
The leaders further alleged that additional cameras were being installed inside Majithia\u2019s jail cell merely as a show and in violation of his rights.
