Chandigarh: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia is set to walk out of jail on Tuesday afternoon after completing bail formalities in the disproportionate assets case, following relief granted by the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n
After the apex court granted him bail, a Mohali court on Monday fixed the bail conditions and ordered his release on furnishing a surety bond of \u20b92 lakh. Once the bond was submitted, the relevant documents were sent online to Nabha jail, where prison authorities are completing the final paperwork for his release.<\/p>\n
Court proceedings to decide the bail conditions began at around 10 am in Mohali. The Punjab Vigilance Bureau was represented by special public prosecutor Ferry Sofat along with vigilance officials, while Majithia was represented by senior advocate H.S. Dhanoa and his legal team.<\/p>\n
Following the completion of all formalities, Majithia\u2019s release from Nabha jail is expected shortly.<\/p>\n
Earlier, on February 2, a Supreme Court bench questioned the Punjab government on the continued incarceration of Majithia, asking, \u201cWhy do you want to keep him in jail?\u201d The court also noted that he had already spent nearly seven months in custody. The apex court was hearing Majithia\u2019s petition challenging orders passed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, for which notice had earlier been issued to the Punjab Vigilance Bureau.<\/p>\n
Majithia was arrested by the Vigilance Bureau on June 25 in a disproportionate assets case allegedly involving assets worth around \u20b9540 crore. During an earlier hearing, he had sought interim bail citing a threat to his life.<\/p>\n
Granting bail, the Supreme Court said the decision was taken after considering the overall circumstances of the case. The court also took note of the fact that Majithia had already been granted bail in an NDPS case in 2022, and the Punjab government\u2019s plea seeking cancellation of that bail was dismissed by the Supreme Court in 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
