Toronto: The Canadian government has launched a drive to deport alleged gangsters living in the country illegally or on refugee status, a move that could impact several India-linked crime figures, including Goldy Brar, a prime accused in the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala.<\/p>\n
According to Canadian media reports, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has prepared a list of 296 alleged gangsters from different countries. Of these, 32 have already received deportation orders from the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.<\/p>\n
However, the CBSA has not made public the names of those facing deportation.<\/p>\n
Punjab-linked gangsters under scanner<\/p>\n
If Canada proceeds strictly with deportations, several wanted gangsters with alleged links to Punjab \u2014 including Goldy Brar and Arshdeep Dalla \u2014 could be sent back to India. Punjab Police are likely to arrest them in connection with pending criminal cases upon their return.<\/p>\n
Canada has long been viewed as an operational base for members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Several associates of the gang are believed to be residing there.<\/p>\n
Extortion, firing incidents on the rise<\/p>\n
Reports indicate that Punjabi and South Asian businesspersons in Canada have increasingly been targeted in extortion and firing cases. In Surrey, police reportedly issued advisories in Punjabi to raise awareness about extortion threats.<\/p>\n
Gangsters allegedly make extortion calls demanding money and, in cases of refusal, have been linked to incidents of firing outside homes and businesses.<\/p>\n
Khalistan supporters also face scrutiny<\/p>\n
Some Khalistan supporters in Canada have also faced allegations of involvement in extortion and firing incidents. Recently, three individuals in Surrey were arrested by Canadian police on similar charges.<\/p>\n
