Chandigarh: A special Central Bureau of Investigation court has acquitted Punjab Police IG Gautam Cheema and five others in a 2014 kidnapping case, setting aside their earlier conviction.<\/p>\n
The court ruled that the 2024 judgment, which had sentenced the accused to eight months\u2019 imprisonment, was legally flawed and lacked merit. The fresh order, issued on April 21, allowed all appeals and cleared the accused of all charges.<\/p>\n
The case had alleged that Cheema, a 1995-batch IPS officer, and others kidnapped an accused, Sumedh Gulati, and obstructed official duty. However, the court found the earlier conviction unsustainable under law.<\/p>\n
Relief was also granted to suspended Ambala Cantonment Board CEO Ajay Chaudhary and other private individuals linked to the case.<\/p>\n
The dispute was rooted in a property-related conflict over profit sharing. Allegations included forcibly taking Gulati from a police station to a hospital and issuing threats. Meanwhile, counter-allegations were also made by property dealer Davinder Gill and his wife, who had earlier claimed false implication due to personal rivalry.<\/p>\n
