Foreign languages can only be studied as a fourth additional language.<\/p>\n<p>According to CBSE, the decision was taken after reviewing the revised Class 9 and 10 curriculum recently released by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).<\/p>\n<p>The board said students opting for a foreign language will be allowed to do so only if the other two selected languages are Indian languages.<\/p>\n<p>CBSE has directed all affiliated schools to review curriculum objectives and learning outcomes related to language education and ensure implementation of the new framework.<\/p>\n<p>In its circular, the board stated that until dedicated textbooks for the third language (R3) are developed, Class 9 students during the 2026-27 session may use the Class 6 R3 textbooks of the chosen language.<\/p>\n<p>Schools have also been encouraged to use local literature such as poems, short stories and novels alongside prescribed textbooks. Detailed guidelines regarding supplementary reading material and teaching methodology will be issued by June 15, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The board acknowledged that some schools may face difficulties in arranging qualified teachers for Indian languages.
