Chandigarh: The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) surged towards a historic victory in Punjab\u2019s municipal elections on Thursday, establishing a commanding lead across the state as counting progressed for 103 urban local bodies.<\/p>\n
According to official figures available till 3 pm, counting had been completed in 1,349 wards, indicating a strong endorsement of the government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Amid multi-cornered contests, AAP emerged as the dominant political force, securing more than one-third of the total wards declared so far.<\/p>\n
One of the most significant results came from Dhuri, the Chief Minister\u2019s Assembly constituency, where AAP registered a near-clean sweep. The party won 20 of the 21 wards in the Dhuri Municipal Council, leaving the opposition with little presence in the civic body.<\/p>\n
As per the latest results, AAP had won 704 wards, while Congress secured 282 seats. Independents won 217 wards, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) 115, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) 79 and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) six.<\/p>\n
