Kolkata: Police have arrested four persons in connection with the attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee during his visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal\u2019s South 24 Parganas district.<\/p>\n
A senior police officer said the arrests were made during late-night raids after investigators examined video footage collected from the area. Further investigation into the incident is underway.<\/p>\n
The attack took place on Saturday when Banerjee, the Diamond Harbour MP, visited Sonarpur to meet people allegedly affected by post-election violence. According to reports, a group of protesters surrounded him, raised slogans and hurled stones and eggs during the visit.<\/p>\n
The situation reportedly escalated when some members of the crowd allegedly attempted to physically assault the TMC leader. Security personnel and members of his personal staff intervened and escorted him away from the area amid heightened tension.<\/p>\n
Police officials said a suo motu FIR was registered in the case as neither Banerjee nor the Trinamool Congress had filed a formal complaint as of Sunday. The four accused are scheduled to be produced before a court in Baruipur.<\/p>\n
Following the incident, Banerjee was taken to a private hospital in Kolkata for medical examination and treatment. He was later discharged after receiving primary care.<\/p>\n
