Chandigarh: Farmer organisations have announced large-scale protests and effigy-burning programmes on June 8 against both the Centre and state governments, citing concerns over fertiliser shortages and other agricultural issues.<\/p>\n
Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said the decision was taken during a meeting of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) in Gwalior, where participating organisations resolved to organise coordinated protests across multiple states.<\/p>\n
According to Pandher, demonstrations are planned in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and several other parts of the country. He said information regarding effigy-burning programmes has already been received from around 17 districts in Punjab.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the key concerns behind the protests, Pandher alleged that farmers are facing an acute shortage of urea fertiliser during the current agricultural season. He claimed that in some areas, retailers and suppliers were forcing farmers to purchase additional products, including pesticides and other farm inputs, along with urea.<\/p>\n
He also alleged that black marketing of urea was being reported in several regions, creating further difficulties for cultivators.<\/p>\n
Pandher said the fertiliser shortage was not confined to a particular state but had emerged as a nationwide challenge. He attributed the situation partly to global factors and supply chain disruptions that have affected the availability of agricultural inputs.<\/p>\n
Farmer organisations have urged governments to ensure adequate fertiliser supplies and take steps to prevent irregularities in distribution. They warned that failure to address the issue could further intensify farmer unrest in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
