Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday launched a \u20b934.51 crore project to concrete-line the Kalyan Rajwaha canal, aiming to strengthen the state’s irrigation network and curb the depletion of groundwater.<\/p>\n
The project will modernise the 60.66-km-long canal and is expected to be completed by October 2026.<\/p>\n
According to the Chief Minister, lining the canal with concrete will increase its water-carrying capacity by 10%, from 150.40 cusecs to 170.61 cusecs, ensuring improved irrigation for farmers.<\/p>\n
The upgraded canal will benefit 42 villages across Barnala and Malerkotla districts, providing better irrigation facilities to around 50,819 acres of agricultural land.<\/p>\n
Mann said the project would be particularly beneficial for farmers in Mehal Kalan block of Barnala district, which has been classified as a dark zone due to severe groundwater depletion. He said increased canal water availability would significantly reduce farmers’ dependence on tube wells and help conserve underground water resources.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the project’s background, the Chief Minister said the Kalyan Rajwaha canal, which originates from Malerkotla, was lined with bricks during the 1980s. However, years of neglect and inadequate maintenance under previous governments left the canal in poor condition, reducing its efficiency and affecting water supply to farmers.<\/p>\n
