Chandigarh: Allegations levelled by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) against a Punjab Police officer have triggered a major controversy, with the force transferring Tanda SHO Gurinderjit Singh Nagara to Police Lines and ordering a departmental inquiry.<\/p>\n
According to an FBI indictment filed in the United States, Nagara has been accused of attempting to extort $400,000 (around \u20b93.3 crore) from an Indian-origin family living in California by allegedly threatening to implicate them in a murder case registered in Punjab.<\/p>\n
Following the allegations, Punjab Police removed Nagara from his post as SHO of Tanda police station. DIG, Jalandhar Range, Naveen Singla said the inquiry has been shifted from Hoshiarpur to Jalandhar to ensure a fair investigation. Jalandhar SP (Investigation) Vineet Ahlawat has been tasked with conducting the probe and submitting a report.<\/p>\n
According to the FBI, the alleged conspiracy involved Gurlal Singh, a 22-year-old Indian national living illegally in Stockton, California, who is alleged to have links with the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang. Investigators claim he shared details of a California-based target with Nagara in April 2026.<\/p>\n
The indictment alleges that the extortion plot revolved around the January 15, 2026 murder of hardware shop owner Balwinder Singh in Miani village under Tanda police station. An FIR was registered under murder, attempt to murder and Arms Act provisions after unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire at the shop, killing Balwinder Singh and injuring another man.<\/p>\n
The FBI further claims that gang members later took responsibility for the killing through a social media post. Investigators allege Nagara subsequently used details from the murder investigation to threaten an Indian-origin family in California.<\/p>\n
According to the indictment, on April 13, 2026, Nagara allegedly contacted the father of one of the intended victims and threatened to implicate the entire family, including two siblings, in the murder case. Three days later, he allegedly demanded $400,000 (around \u20b93.3 crore) in exchange for not naming them in the investigation.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Punjab Police has said it has not received any official communication from the FBI regarding the case. Speaking to the media, Tanda DSP Davinder Singh said the department was unaware why the FBI had taken up the matter and suggested that the accused in the Punjab murder case may have approached the US agency to avoid legal proceedings in India.<\/p>\n
