AFTER GREEN REVOLUTION, PUNJAB TO NOW PIONEER GREEN STEELMAKING REVOLUTION AS WITH CM’S EFFORTS FIRST OF ITS KIND GREEN STEEL PLANT OF NORTH INDIA TO COME UP AT LUDHIANA

Ludhiana News: Due to concerted efforts of the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann the global business giant Tata Steel has set up the first of its kind Green Steel Plant of North India at Ludhiana with a proposed investment of Rs 2600 crore.

      The plant, ground breaking ceremony of which was performed by the Chief Minister today, will produce construction-grade steel rebar under the company’s flagship retail brand ‘Tata Tiscon’ and this investment aligns with Tata Steel’s commitment to a circular economy and transitioning to low-carbon steel making through the Steel Recycling Route. The plant having a capacity of 0.75 MTPA with a 100% scrap-based electric arc furnace is set up over 115 acres of land at Kadiana Khurd, Hi-Tech Valley. The project is likely to create direct and indirect employment opportunities for around 500 direct and 2000 indirect individuals, respectively, through its operations.

       In the Steel and Alloys sector, Punjab is a significant player, with more than 200 steel rolling mills and key clusters in Mandi Gobindgarh and Ludhiana. It is home to major steel units like Vardhaman Special Steels, Aarti Steels, Hero Steels, JSW Steels and more and this sector has been identified as a thrust sector under the Industrial Business Development Policy 2022. Tata Steel Limited is a true gem in the crown of steel and alloy sector of Punjab and it is among the top global steel companies with an annual crude steel capacity of 34 million tons per annum.

     In his address CEO & MD Tata Steels TV Narendran profusely thanked the Chief Minister for ensuring that all the clearances are given in a stipulated and time bound manner. He said that the plant will be ready and operational within the coming 18 months adding that Punjab has become the second home of Tata Steels. Narendran said that Punjab had pioneered the green revolution in the country and now Green Steelmaking Revolution will also be heralded by the state.

       Meanwhile, expressing gratitude to the state government the Vice President (Corporate Services) Tata Steel Chanakya Chaudhary said that they had got swift clearances for the project during the entire process. He also thanked the Panchs and Sarpanchs of the nearby villages for extending fulsome support to them for executing the project. Chaudhary said that now they are also part of the Punjab adding that they will open a skill centre to impart quality technical training to the youth.

      In his address Chairman M&S (Long Products) Tata Steel Ashish Anupam said that this plant will produce 7500 ton steel without polluting the environment. He said that in this unique plant, the steel will be made by recycling the scrap. Anupam said that this plant will promote green power as coal will not be used for production.
