Case registered against agent for duping youth deported from US Chandigarh: Punjab police have registered a case against Gurkirat Singh, a local immigration agent, for allegedly cheating a youth who was recently deported from the United States. The accused is currently absconding, and police have launched a search operation to apprehend him. The complaint was filed by Mandeep Singh, 29, a resident of Chohla Sahib, who alleged that he paid Rs 22 lakh to Gurkirat Singh to facilitate his illegal entry into the US. According to Mandeep, he initially traveled to Spain in 2022 with hopes of securing a better future. Later, through Gurkirat Singh’s contacts, he was sent to Mexico in January this year, where he was handed over to a group of human traffickers, known as “donkers.” Mandeep claimed that these traffickers extorted additional money from him and subjected him to physical abuse when he demanded food and faster travel arrangements. Meanwhile, Gurkirat Singh allegedly demanded more money from Mandeep’s family. On January 22, after his passport and documents were seized by the traffickers, he crossed the US-Mexico border but was apprehended by American authorities. Mandeep was among 104 illegal immigrants, including 30 Punjabis, who were recently deported from the US. They arrived at Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji International Airport. Police have intensified efforts to locate and arrest Gurkirat Singh.
