Seven states, including Punjab, have dropout rates higher than the national average
Punjab E News: In seven states of the country, the dropout rate by students at secondary level is higher than the national average of 12.6 per cent in 2021-22. These states include Punjab, Gujarat, Bihar, Karnataka and Assam etc. The central government has suggested these states to take special steps to reduce the drop-out rate.
This information has been obtained from the documents of the meetings regarding the action plan for the year 2023-24 of the Project Approval Board (PAB) under the Ministry of Education on the Content Education Program.
These meetings were held with various states and Union Territories during March and May. The government wants to achieve 100 per cent gross enrolment rate (GER) at the level of school education by 2030 under the new education policy, but considers the dropout of children midway.
According to the documents of the PAB meeting, in the year 2021-22, the dropout rate at secondary level in schools in Bihar was 20.46 per cent, Gujarat 17.85 per cent, Andhra Pradesh 16.7 per cent, Assam 20.3 per cent, Karnataka 14.6 per cent, Punjab 17.2 per cent, Meghalaya 21.7 per cent. According to the documents, there has been an increase of about three per cent in enrollment at the primary level in Delhi’s schools, while there has been a decline of about five per cent in enrollment at the secondary level.
