33 Indians freed from ‘slavery’ in Italy, mostly from Punjab

New Delhi: Thirty-three Indians have been rescued from bonded labour by local authorities in Italy’s northern Verona province. Most of the 33 freed Indians are of Punjabi origin.

Not only this, the two accused who have been arrested are also of Punjabi origin. The authorities have also seized 5.45 lakh euros from both the alleged accused.

The investigation into the incident began in June. Bonded labor in Italy came into the limelight after an accident in June in which Satnam Singh, a Punjabi fruit plucker, died after his hand was cut off by the machine.

Satnam’s hand was amputated after being hit by a strawberry wrapping machine at Lazio near Rome. After which he was taken to the hospital, where he died.
