7.7-magnitude earthquake devastates Myanmar and Bangkok, over 1000 dead
New Delhi: A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar and Bangkok on Friday, causing widespread destruction. In Myanmar alone, more than 1,000 deaths have been reported, with over 2,000 people injured. Officials fear the death toll may rise further.
The earthquake’s epicenter was about 10 kilometers below the ground near the city of Sagaing, approximately 250 kilometers from Myanmar’s capital, Naypyitaw. State broadcaster MRTV reported fatalities at a hospital in Naypyitaw, with the affected area expected to suffer heavy casualties.
Doctors in Mandalay said a mosque collapsed during the quake while many people were inside. A university building in the city also caught fire. The US Geological Survey has warned that the death toll in Myanmar could exceed 10,000.
Official figures on the damage in Myanmar and Bangkok have not yet been released, but videos circulating online show multiple buildings collapsing, indicating significant destruction.
