Bangladesh violence: 93 killed so far, curfew announced across the country
Dhaka: At least 97 people, including 14 policemen, were killed as fierce clashes broke out between supporters of the ruling Awami League and protesters demanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation in different parts of Bangladesh, police said today.
At the same time, hundreds of others were injured in this violence. Mobile internet services were suspended and curfew was imposed across the country for an indefinite period. India has asked its citizens in Bangladesh to remain in touch and be vigilant.
Where did the violence begin?
The protesters, demanding the resignation of the government over the issue of reservation system in government jobs, arrived on Sunday to participate in the ‘Non-Cooperation Program’ organized under the banner of ‘Students Against Discrimination’. Activists of Awami League, Chhatra League and Jubo League opposed them and then a clash broke out between the two sides.
