Canadian govt to find way to provide PR to Indian students on deportation notice
Ottawa: The Canadian government is working on a process to prevent the return of a large number of Indian students facing the risk of being deported from there. The students, mostly Punjabis, have been accused of obtaining visas through fake admission letters.
Housing Minister Sean Fraser said students will now be given a chance to prove that they have been taken advantage of.
The administration came to know about the students’ admit letters being fake in March when they were applying for permanent residency (PR). Responding to parliament on Monday, Fraser said that “innocent students, who are victims of fraud”, will be given the opportunity to prove that they have been taken advantage of. The government will provide an ‘appropriate solution’ for this. He also said that due to this uncertainty about the future, many students are suffering from mental stress.
Fraser made the remarks in response to a question from NDP member Jenny Cowan. The minister, however, added that the fraudsters or those involved in the conspiracy will have to face the consequences of non-compliance with Canadian law. India has taken up the issue of these students with the Canadian authorities several times and called for a humane approach as the students are victims of agent fraud.
