Canadian PM Mark Carney expected to call early elections

Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to request the dissolution of Parliament from Governor General Mary Simon on Sunday, paving the way for a snap federal election, according to sources cited by CBC News.

Carney, who was sworn in as prime minister last week following the resignation of Justin Trudeau, has emphasized the need for a strong and clear mandate during what he described as a time of crisis. If the request is granted, the election could take place on April 28 or May 4.

When asked about the timing of the election, Carney remained tight-lipped, stating that Governor General Mary Simon would be the first to know.

“It is clear that in this time of crisis, the government needs a strong and clear mandate. We are presenting a positive outlook for the country,” he said.

Further details are expected in the coming days.
