Iranians accused of hacking Trump’s presidential campaign in US

Washington: The US Department of Justice today indicted three Iranian men on suspicion of allegedly hacking Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and circulating stolen information to media organisations. The Justice Department said the three accused hackers were stationed at Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard and that their propaganda campaign targeted several people, including government officials, members of the media and non-governmental organizations.

The Trump campaign revealed on August 10 that it had been hacked and said the three Iranian countries had stolen and circulated sensitive internal documents. Several leading media outlets, including Politico, The New York Times and The Washington Post, said insider classified information from the Trump campaign had been leaked to them but they refused to broadcast it.

U.S. intelligence officials later linked Iran to an attempt to hack the Trump campaign and disrupt the Joe Biden-Kamala Harris campaign. Last week, officials also revealed that in late June and early July, Iranians sent unsolicited emails containing excerpts of hacked information to people linked to Biden’s campaign.
