Jagmeet Singh’s NDP withdraws support to Trudeau government

Toronto: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government suffered a major setback when the Jagmeet Singh-led New Democratic Party (NDP), which supports the minority government, withdrew support to the government.

The incident has shaken the Trudeau government’s position and the prime minister will have to look for other partners to stay in power until the October 2025 elections.

Jagmeet Singh has announced that he is “breaking” his 2022 agreement with Trudeau. Announcing the break-up of the agreement in a video message released on social media, Jagmeet Singh said, “Trudeau has proved time and again that he will continue to bow down to corporate greed.” He was referring to the government’s failure to contain inflation.

Trudeau, on the other hand, has refused to hold early elections, announcing the continuation of his government and his social programs. Trudeau’s party will lose badly if elections are held now, according to poll surveys.
