Mark Carney to be sworn in as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister on Friday
Ottawa: Mark Carney, the new leader of the Liberal Party, will be sworn in as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister at 11 a.m. local time on Friday at Rideau Hall, the residence of Governor General Mary Simon.
The rest of the ministers in Carney’s cabinet will also take the oath during the ceremony.
Ahead of the swearing-in, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will visit the Governor General’s residence to formally resign.
The composition of Carney’s cabinet remains unclear, but initial indications suggest it will be smaller than the current 36-member team. Reports suggest only ministers with strong public approval may be retained.
Trudeau had resigned as party leader on January 6, and the Governor General subsequently postponed the spring session of Parliament until March 24. While the minority Liberal government currently faces no immediate threat, sources indicate that Carney may dissolve Parliament and call for midterm elections before the session resumes.
Earlier, the main opposition party had been advocating for midterm elections. However, following shifts in Canada’s political landscape, particularly after the American tariff case, the party appears to have softened its stance on an early election.
