Mark Carney to become Canada’s next Prime Minister amid US trade tensions

Toronto: Former central banker Mark Carney has been elected leader of Canada’s Liberal Party and is set to become the country’s next Prime Minister, succeeding Justin Trudeau.

Carney, 59, takes charge at a time of heightened tensions between Canada and the United States, driven by a tariff war initiated by US President Donald Trump and concerns over Canada’s sovereignty.

Trudeau announced his resignation in January but remained in office until his successor was chosen. Carney, who previously led the Bank of Canada and later became the first non-citizen to head the Bank of England in 2013, now steps into a politically charged landscape.

The ongoing trade dispute with the US has fueled Canadian nationalism, with many citizens boycotting American goods and canceling trips to the US. This growing sentiment has bolstered

the Liberal Party’s prospects ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections, expected in the coming weeks.
