More than 15,000 people killed in earthquake in Turkey and Syria

Antakya: More than 15,000 people have been killed in earthquakes in Turkey and Syria so far. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan acknowledged “shortcomings” in relief and rescue work on Wednesday.

As criticism grew online, Erdogan visited one of the worst-hit places in the quake. Acknowledging the problems in relief work in the earthquake center Kaharanmaras, he said, “Of course, there are shortcomings. It is clearly visible. It is not possible to be prepared for such a disaster.”
Thousands of buildings have collapsed due to the earthquake. An unknown number of people are still stranded. The severe cold has also hampered relief operations.

People are helplessly asking for help, but they are not getting help. “My nephew, my sister-in-law and my sister-in-law’s sister are buried under the rubble,” said Semir Koban, a kindergarten teacher in Hate, Turkey. We can’t reach them. We are trying to talk to them, but they are not responding… We are waiting for help. It’s been 48 hours now.”
