No-confidence motion: Trudeau succeeds in saving minority government
Toronto: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has successfully maintained his minority government despite facing a no-confidence motion introduced by the main opposition, the Conservatives.
The no-confidence motion was a significant test for Trudeau ahead of next year’s general election. During the parliamentary debate on the motion, there were heated exchanges between the ruling and opposition parties. The motion, introduced by the Conservatives, was defeated with 211 votes against and 120 in favor.
Although Trudeau has thwarted the Conservatives’ attempts to topple the government, he is likely to face further challenges in the coming days and weeks. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre indicated that another effort might be made as soon as next week to challenge Trudeau’s minority government.
Trudeau’s government was reduced to a minority after the left-wing New Democratic Party (NDP) withdrew its external support for the Liberals.
