Storm leaves thousands without power in Britain and Ireland
London: Strong winds and heavy rainfall have left thousands in Britain and Ireland without electricity. Winds reaching speeds of 93 miles per hour prompted the UK Met Office to issue a red alert yesterday, warning residents in Northern Ireland, Wales, and western England to stay indoors.
The storm has caused widespread disruption. Major highways and bridges across the UK were closed, and several train services were suspended due to dangerous conditions.
As of 9 a.m., the Energy Networks Association reported that approximately 86,000 homes in England, Scotland, and Wales remained without power.
In Ireland, about 400,000 homes, farms, and industrial sites were affected by power outages. Dublin Airport canceled several flights, while Heathrow Airport in London also saw significant disruption, with numerous flights canceled or diverted to Germany and other countries.
Residents in affected areas spent the day indoors following a night of severe weather, as emergency services worked to restore electricity and clear blocked roads.
